An evening with Artemis Joukowsky exploring the remarkable World War II legacy of Martha and Waitstill Sharp.

Beer, wine, and passed hors d’oeuvres included!

Join us for a special evening at the Wellesley History & Exhibit Center as we debut Exhibit Spotlight at Night, a new after-hours program highlighting stories from our Wellesley Through Time exhibit.

On April 15 from 6:00–8:30 PM, we are honored to welcome Artemis Joukowsky, grandson of Martha and Waitstill Sharp, for an engaging talk on his grandparents’ extraordinary legacy. A Unitarian minister and social worker from Wellesley, the Sharps risked their lives during World War II to assist refugees fleeing Nazi persecution, helping hundreds escape across Europe. Their courage and humanitarian efforts later earned them recognition as ‘Righteous Among the Nation's’ by Yad Vashem, one of the highest honors for those who aided Jews during the Holocaust.

Drawing from decades of research and personal connection, Joukowsky has dedicated his life to preserving and sharing their story, including co-directing the PBS documentary Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War. His presentation offers a powerful, firsthand perspective on the moral courage, sacrifice, and lasting impact of two Wellesley residents whose actions changed countless lives.

The evening will also include beer, wine, and passed hors d’oeuvres, offering a chance to gather, reflect, and engage with this important story in a meaningful setting.
